Serious Poll: How many of you would purchase a beautiful diaper cake as a gift/centerpiece for the new mom?

If you%26#039;ve never seen one, it%26#039;s shaped like a 1-3 layer wedding cake if you can picture it with ribbons and gifts for the new baby. They can be elegent with flowers or adorned with cute characters/themes that the parents have chosen for their new bundle of joy. I%26#039;m just wanting some idea as to how many people might find this interesting, creative and worth purchasing. Thanks for your comments.

Serious Poll: How many of you would purchase a beautiful diaper cake as a gift/centerpiece for the new mom?
I think the parents ( ESPECIALLY the mom) would love it!! I know I would. That sounds so beautiful and how thoughtful it would be to have someone actually put in the time and effort to buy a gift that is special, creative and more than the typical gifts!

I am 14 weeks pregnant myself with my third. Can you come and be my best friend and throw me a baby shower!?! lol You truely sound like a wonderful friend!! God Bless.
Reply:well i have never bought one but i had a girlfriend make one for me. i put a link to where u can get directions to make one and i heard its not that hard...im going to make one for a friend of mine...good luck hon
Reply:i would it sounds cute! and it also different!
Reply:I had one for my baby shower. It was really cool, and the diapers got used after the shower. Nothing is a waste of $$ if it can be used for two different reasons. Mine was decorated really nice. It didn%26#039;t look tacky at all!

Good luck!
Reply:I think they are a little tacky
Reply:that sounds really cute i never seen one before
Reply:Well - I%26#039;ve seen them, but I don%26#039;t think I%26#039;d purchase one unless it was for a baby shower of, say, 40 people or more. It%26#039;s a cute idea, it really is, and they can be quite lovely (not to mention funny) but they%26#039;re pretty pricey and, er, inedible LOL. Since there%26#039;s also all the rest of the shower expenses to consider, I think I would probably spend mine elsewhere.
Reply:I got a diaper cake at my shower and thought it was great. It was a very cute gift idea.
Reply:I think they are a good idea. The diapers can always be used (isn%26#039;t that the idea?).

It%26#039;s a very practical and useful gift, unlike clothes that may or maynot be too little before the baby is even born or may be something we wouldn%26#039;t want for our baby.
Reply:Sounds like a really cool idea.
Reply:I rec%26#039;d one @ my baby shower %26amp; I loved it! It%26#039;s so different!
Reply:I don%26#039;t see myself ever buying something like that. But that%26#039;s the kind of person I am. I guess there%26#039;s more of a chance, still an off chance though, that I%26#039;d make one if it%26#039;s what I had my heart set on giving.
Reply:As a mom of two kids I can honestly say that I am really glad that nobody gave me one. I much preferred the diapers still in the packages that I got instead. But I%26#039;m also limited on space, so I have to think about what the easiest way to store things would be. Having the diapers out of their packages and taking up more space just wouldn%26#039;t work for me. They%26#039;re cute, and the idea is great, but just remember to keep in mind the moms living conditions as well before you decide to give one.
Reply:Last year the diaper cake was THE unique gift for baby showers.

Now, it%26#039;s available on hundreds of baby shower gift websites.

Heck, a google search on %26quot;diaper cake%26quot; turned up nearly 300,000 hits!

Ho hum, been there, done that.
Reply:i got one for my baby shower and loved it so much i give them as gifts to all baby showers i attend
Reply:I%26#039;d not purchace the cake but make one. Or a diaper wreath myself as its cheaper.
Reply:It%26#039;s cute, but a waste of money.. you know where the diapers would end up. I%26#039;d never purchase one, but I%26#039;d entertain ideas to build one myself.
Reply:I think it is unique to say the least. Depending on the sense of humor the parents to be have is whether or not I wuold do it. I would get a kick out of it myself
Reply:I would it gives a little special touch and a great conversation piece.

Im sure the mom to be would love it. I love the embelishments that can make a shower even better. Great Idea
Reply:I wouldn%26#039;t purchase it but I would make it on my own... I have done my own diaper wreath for my sister in laws baby shower, it was fun and easy to make. Lots of ppl buy them off Ebay and if you are looking to start selling them, they do sell you would just have to advertise and show off your work!
Reply:i would..... never thought of that and I always make cakes for wedding, baby showers, birthdays.

What do you do to the old hibiscus tree flowers and where's the best place for them in the winter?

I recently purchased a few hibiscus trees on sale at Lowes and I know pretty much how to care for them, but I am unsure of two things. What are you supposed to do with the old flowers the day after? Do you pull them off or do you let them fall off themselves? Also, i read that it is better to keep them outside in the beginning of the winter, let them die off, trim them back, then store them in the garage for a couple of months. Then you bring them inside with a lot of sun until it is warm outside. Is that true? I live in Va, so the length of time that it is cold is not that long, but I don%26#039;t want them to die, they are so pretty. Thanks for answering my questions.

What do you do to the old hibiscus tree flowers and where%26#039;s the best place for them in the winter?
Yes, it%26#039;s true, bring them inside when the threat of frost is coming. Hibiscus are a tropical plant and widely found in Florida and Mexico. That should give you an idea of the conditions that the plant likes. Lots of warmth, sun, and humidity.

When the flowers (which are good for a day, unfortunately) have bloomed, pinch them off with your fingernails, cut with scissors, shears, or clippers depending on the maturity or thickness of the stem. And, when you pinch or cut this back, new grow will appear shortly. Some people just let the old blooms fall off, but, yuck, they look awful until they do, all shriveled, brown, and ruining the look of the rest of the beautiful tree.

Most hibiscus will die if left out in the cold and get frostbite. You can pot them up in containers to bring into the garage, a very sunny spot in your home, like a sun room, protected area of a porch, or any sunny window area that is warm. And yes, cut them back when you bring them inside; it%26#039;s less stress on the plant to perform.

Good luck with those wonderful trees!
Reply:I pull my dead blooms off or they make a mess on my deck. I put them back into the pot tho... to help feed the soil. The ones that I have planted, I just let them fall off back into the bed usually.

I dont bring my potted ones inside. I just make sure they aren%26#039;t in the North wind%26#039;s course. (I am in TX) I cut back the ones that are planted... they are blocked from the North wind and come back fuller every year. Mulch protects too...
Reply:With hibiscus plants, just let the flowers drop off. They only last a couple days and they fall off by themselves, unlike roses, for example, which form rose hips.

The issue with hibiscus in the winter time is that the plants will stop flowering in the cold (around 50 degrees). They are, after all, a tropical plant. Hibiscus must be brought inside when the weather gets cold or they%26#039;ll die. And, if kept in a warm, sunny location, they will flower all winter.

Hibiscus can tolerate temperatures down to about freezing without damaging the plant. But, prolonged exposure to freezing temperatures will kill the plant.

During the summer, water hibiscus regularly (or whenever you see the leaves droop) and feed with an Osmocote type of fertilizer. But, during winter, do not fertilize. Hibiscus is susceptible to root rot when overwatered and should be given just enough water to prevent droopy leaves. Also, do not leave hibiscus plant pots in a saucer over the winter or leave water pooled in the saucer during the summer. The standing water will cause the root rot.
Reply:Hi there,

You can leave the flowers on the hibiscus until they fall off. Behind the flowers that fall off, you will see a green pod. These are the seed pods. Let them turn brown/black. Squeeze them a little and you will hear a pop noise. When you hear this noise, you can cut the pods off the main plant. Hold the pod over a container and slowly open the pod.....and there are the seeds. You can plant these next year in another container or in the ground. This is sooooo much fun! I am collecting like mad this week, there are gobs and gobs of pods on our hibiscus.

At the first frost, cut your hibiscus to the soil line,

put it somewhere such as a work shop so the roots will not freeze.

We always throw something over them such as an old blanket, tarp, or rug.

When the outside weather gets around 65 next spring, bring them outside into the sun but out of the spring winds.

Mix in slow release fertililzer into the soil (read the directions).

Water the containers.

After the plants are about a foot or two tall, start a liquid fertilizer schedule such as every 14 days of once per month. You will get lots of flowers.

Where online can I purchase Sterling Silver Roses?

I%26#039;ve checked all the major online flower shops to no avail: proflowers, 800flowers, ftd, conroys, etc. Does anyone know where I can purchase these beautiful roses?

Where online can I purchase Sterling Silver Roses?
If I were you i%26#039;d make a different choice. Sterling Sliver has a very low rating from the American Rose Society. (last time i checked it was rated at 4.2 out of a 0 to 10 rating system.) I had nothing but trouble with the one I received as a gift. As a rule most serious Rose growers won%26#039;t touch a Rose lower then 8.0. Sterling Sliver is at half that rating. Several others that I know of also found it to be a waste of garden space when so many better Roses are out there. I assure you, you will be unhappy with this Rose in your garden.
Reply:It sounds to me like you mean %26quot;cut roses%26quot; and not rose bushes? Am I correct?

Strange as this may sound, some flower shop employees (depending on who you speak to) don%26#039;t know they%26#039;re rose varieties. The next time you ask for such roses (if you want cut ones) say, %26quot;Do you have any lavender roses in stock? The kind with the strong fragrance?%26quot; Then they will definitely know what you are talking about. I can%26#039;t imagine a florist with a good reputation not being able to get a hold of these roses for you.

Then again, the actual variety of fragrant, lavender roses florist now use might have changed.

A potted Sterling Silver for your garden? More popular varieties have taken over the market. These include: Moon Madness, Purple Passion, Melody Parfumee, and Intrigue.

As an aside, I believe one of the parents of Sterling Silver was the Peace Rose.

Hope this helps you. Hope you can at least find a substitute for this very unusual and precious rose variety.
Reply:I bought this flower at Sears in their garden center. It was on clearance for $6.50 about a month ago since the season is about over. It was a Jackson %26amp; Perkins brand rose. The last time I was there, they still had some roses on clearance. Perhaps there will be some left in your area as well. Best of Luck!!! (I hope you meant for the garden).
Reply:I%26#039;m not sure about online, but a good local florist should be able to get them- my wedding florist got them no trouble, she said they were popular.
Reply:A Yahoo search for %26quot;sterling silver roses%26quot; (include the quotation marks in the search box) yields 19,400 results. If you do the same search, and are willing to spend a little time exploring, I%26#039;m sure that you will quickly find the information you seek. The first page of results has several sites where they can be ordered.

Good luck with your search.

Anyone seen a shower curtain with poppy flowers?

I%26#039;m looking for a shower curtain that I saw at Kohl%26#039;s last year, should have purchased, and didn%26#039;t. I don%26#039;t necessarily need this specific curtain, but that would be ideal. It was white with large, red poppy flowers on it. It was a cloth curtain, not vinyl. I%26#039;ve done exhaustive internet searches for something similar and haven%26#039;t come up with anything yet. Some help would be appreaciated.

Anyone seen a shower curtain with poppy flowers?
Everything shows up eventually on eBay. Just keep looking. The closest I find today is this one:

Reply:I have not seen a shower curtain with poppies for some time now. You could buy a solid color, then yourself or an artistic friend could put on the poppies with fabric paint. One other idea,go to or call a Kohl%26#039;s outlet, they might have the one you saw.

My red cherry tomatoes have yellow flowers for now 3-4 weeks. When should I be expecting tomatoes?

I have been faithfully watering my tomato plants every other day. It is receiving a lot of sun and been growing nicely. Flowers have been bloomed now for several weeks and I am wondering when I should be expecting tomatoes. I was told that it should be a week after the flowers has bloomed, but it is now nearly 4 weeks. Please let me know what I should do to help develop the tomatoes. I purchased two tomato plants from a nursery and transferred them to a large pot and they are now about two feet tall erected with a tomato cage.

My red cherry tomatoes have yellow flowers for now 3-4 weeks. When should I be expecting tomatoes?
you seem to be doing the right thing, only water every day, and three times a week with tomatorite fertiliser, tiny toms will appear after the flowers fade, good luck
Reply:Tomhaslisa has it right!!

You got no pollinators...bees, butterflies, etcs..use a q-tip like his advises..I had to do thing very same thing with my cucumber plants last year.

We need to make very clear as growers that protection of our environment is very important to us as VOTERS.

Vote to have a safe eniviroment for your children and grands; Save the honey bees that pollinate our fruits.

..The plastic bag from super market is used for twenty minutes then discarded into landfill by thousands of Americans everyday; I bet an Iraqi would like to have any kind of bag to carry any belongings they might have for a day to the next refugee camp?
Reply:First, is it warm where you live? Tomatoes need night temperatures that are in the 50s to set fruit.

If the temps are OK, try this: in the morning, go out and SHAKE your plants gently. This sometimes helps tomato plants to self-pollinate. Do this for several days.

Good Luck!!
Reply:You need to feed the plants now that they are in bloom - liquid tomato feed diluted.
Reply:You probably have no bees in the area to pollinate the flowers. Take a q-tip (cotton swab) and rub the flowers, moving from flower to flower with the same tip. This simulates what a bee does to pollinate the flowers, which is needed to develop the fruit.
Reply:Are your tomatoes in a greenhouse where no insects can come and pollinate the tomato flowers? If so, then you have to tap the plants, midday is best when the %26quot;pollen of the day%26quot; is loose and ready to fall. If outside, then the plants should at least have a breeze to shake them to set the pollen free. Are the flowers still on the plants? Maybe you are just impatient. Flowers that have been pollinated will remain on the plant, and those that are not, will fall off. Give the flowers a chance to open properly, and good luck. In the winter, we had to whack the wires daily at midday to %26quot;shake%26quot; the plants to promote pollination.
Reply:Its just waiting there is nothing more you can do. They may be taking longer because they aren%26#039;t used to the different temperature.

Do Asiatic Lily flowers grow back if blewn away?

I purchased a beautiful orange Asiatic Lily about a month ago in Western New York. It lasted two weeks but then we had one really windy and cold day. The following morning the flowers were blewn away. The stem and leaves are still bright and green but what of the flowers? Will they come back this summer? Is there anything I could do to help. I%26#039;m a novice when it comes to gardening.

Do Asiatic Lily flowers grow back if blewn away?
No, they won%26#039;t come back this summer but next spring they will since they are bulbs. They work like tulips and daffodils. I would cover the plant with some mulch in the winter to help keep it warm.

Good luck!
Reply:Lilies usually only bloom once a year. Overwinter them and they should bloom again next year.
Reply:I, too, live in Western NY...Upstate. It%26#039;s doubtful they will bloom again this year, but they will come back again next year. Fertilize %26amp; leave it be. Don%26#039;t clip anything off. In the Fall, when the stalk turns brown, you can clip that back.
Reply:I have Asiatic lillies in my garden. They grow from a bulb. If the flowers are removed, the bulb will be o.k. but the flower won%26#039;t grow again this season. It will come back up next season. Leave the leaves and stem to turn yellow on their own. Some people remove them because it doesn%26#039;t look very pretty but it%26#039;s better for the bulb to leave the foliage turn yellow. The bulb is simply putting it%26#039;s energy into itself rather than the foliage and you%26#039;ll have better flowers next year.

Heirloom flowers, I want to identify a blooming plant.?

Last year I purchased a plant at a church plant sale, and the grower did not know the name of this plant. I have seen these plants in old neighborhoods in rural central Missouri. I believe it is a bi-annual, and the bloom is on a 24-30 inch spike. The leaves are alternate up the spike. flowers are in a cluster and have four pedals. Thank you

Heirloom flowers, I want to identify a blooming plant.?
Take a sample or a picture of it into your nearest plant nursery and have them identify it. They should have many different books on plants to help.

Good luck!
Reply:The Missouri Botanical Garden identified the plant from a photograph. It is %26quot;Dames Rocket%26quot;, a garden plant brought from Europe in the 17th Century. They identified it as being in the cabbage family but it is probably in the Mustard Family.. Thanks. Report It
